Don’t ever let somebody tell you-you can’t do something, not even me. Alright? You dream, you gotta protect it.People can’t do something themselves, they wanna tell you-you can’t do it. If you want something, go get it. Period.
– Chris Gardner, from The Pursuit of Happyness
Introduction
Hello everyone and welcome to my blog! I’m Liron Mendelsohn, pronounced La-rone and rhymes with Patrone or Post Malone, if that helps. I am a senior marketing major and management minor set to graduate in May 2020. I chose to do my passion project on movies and specifically looking into the various genres of movies. I’ve always been a big movie buff since I was little. My dad used to take my siblings and I to see the latest movies in theaters quite often. If we really liked the movie, we would wait until it came on to DVD and add it to our collection. After a while we had amassed a substantial movie collection so large it had its own section of the house. My siblings and I loved to pick a new movie to watch every night. This is where the love of movies was first instilled in me. Later in life, my older brother became a film major and would send me obscure films he had discovered in his classes. I watched most of them, not all were good, but they were incredibly interesting and showed me new perspectives. Although my brother moved across the country, we still try to watch the same movies and review them on the phone together.
Favorite movies
My top 5 favorite movies include Princess Mononoke, Across the Universe, Phantom of the Opera, Into the Spiderverse and Midsommar. Some of my favorite movies when I was younger were the Studio Ghibli Hayao Miyazaki films. Most people’s favorite Hayao Miyazaki film is typically Spirited Away. Don’t get me wrong, I love Spirited Away, but Princess Mononoke will forever be my top favorite. The visuals are amazing, and it has a great underlying message behind it. Not to mention, a badass female lead! Without spoiling the movie for anyone who has yet to see it, it is a powerful narrative about the effects of humans on nature. My next favorite movie is Across the Universe. Across the Universe is a musical set to the songs of The Beatles. What’s not to love? The great soundtrack combined with the story about war and romance has always drawn me in. Next is the Phantom of the Opera, another musical! About a phantom of the opera that lurks and causes things to go amiss so he can get to his love Christine, this is another movie with a great soundtrack that I find myself compelled to sing along with. Another favorite of mine is Into the Spiderverse. This movie is a great adaptation of the classic Spiderman tale. Unlike the traditional Spiderman comic, this movie focuses on the different universe Spidermen. It’s humorous, has gorgeous colorful animation, and has a dynamic main character that you learn to love. Last on my top 5 favorite movies list is Midsommar. This movie is definitely different than all the others. I don’t find myself particularly drawn to horror movies, but this movie was a horror movie that I could actually watch without being too scared. It’s about a girl who has just gone through a traumatic experience finding herself celebrating the Midsommar tradition with a Swedish cult. Again, I don’t want to spoil this for anyone, but all I can say is that it’s amazingly disturbing and twisted and makes you not want to miss a single second of the insanity.

Blog posts
In my blog posts, I hope to narrow down to top 3 movies in each genre category. Narrowing down to the top 3 movies per genre will prove to be difficult, but I hope to survey a multitude of college students so I can gain new perspective than my own. I will discuss each movie in detail of what I liked and did not like. I love movies, but have not seen everything out there. Feel free to leave comments with your favorite movies and any movie suggestions you think that I should check out.
